Environmental Issues: US And Global

While the last 100 years have brought great advances in industrialization and technology, presumably improving the quality of life of humans, these recent decades have also brought more harm to the environment than seen in the past million years.

From climate change caused by ozone depletion to acid rain and deforestation…from air pollution to water pollution and ocean pollution…there are serious environmental issues that threaten not only the Earth’s ecosystems, but also its prospects for longterm survival.

The top 10 environmental disasters have all occurred in the past 100 years, four of them caused by nuclear technology, with another three the result of major oil spills or oil fires.

In producing enough energy, food, and consumer products for the billions of people on the planet, there are severe consequences. Energy plants are keeping us warm at night but killing the ozone layer that protects the earth.

Agricultural practices for mass food production are injecting massive amounts of pesticides and fertilizers into the land, air and water – and into our bodies. There is no safe place to put the chemical and industrial waste from mining and manufacturing.

And yet, we all blithely go about our lives each day, trying to do our best. Trying not to use plastic bags. Trying to buy local and organic. Trying to recycle, reuse, and repurpose. Trying to turn down the thermostat and switch to Energy Star appliances. Trying to ride the bus to work or bike to school. Trying not to consume so much and waste even more.

Does it make a difference to the environment, our miniscule efforts? Yes, every bit helps…and we have to start somewhere!
